Bridging of Probabilistic Forecasts and Civil Protection (PROFORCE)

The 2-year project based on strong transnational cooperation between meteorological institutes and civil protection agencies in the partner countries, aims to develop a seamless probabilistic forecasting system to reduce warning of severe weather from days to hours in time and to shorten the distance in space. Feedback from the end-users will be integrated to tailor the system especially to civil protection applications to enhance decision making processes.

The developed system will be tested and evaluated for selected severe weather events (thunderstorms, floods, droughts etc.) in a pre-defined pilot area with special focus on assessing its suitability and reliability in comparison to the traditional deterministic weather forecasts.

To strengthen and sustain the network of scientists, forecasters and end users in partner countries, a training session will be organised involving civil protection authorities.
