European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations

Since 2004, over 1000 people have been killed and more than 3.4 million affected by flooding in Europe. Statutory and community responses need to continue improving, particularly in urban areas. Northern Ireland’s experience after severe and sustained flooding in Belfast led to research detailing urban gaps. Similar experience is found in partner countries Denmark & Hungary. This project aims to contribute towards:

(1) individuals and urban communities being better prepared for the increased level of incidence of flooding;

(2) ensuring the right level of support, especially emotional support, to aid recovery from the effects of flooding;

(3) study current, and encourage exchange of, good practice on multiagency partnerships in civil protection.
