Mapping bird sensitivity to marine oil pollution (MARINE BIRD OIL MAP)

Area of activity/subject: Oil spills (marine and coastal)

Summary of the project: Seabirds are among the organisms most (visually) impacted by oil spills, and must be taken into account when designing prevention and response strategies. The project aims, through an international coordination approach, to provide the competent authorities in maritime emergencies with the best available information with which to avoid important impacts to seabirds: sensitivity maps and updated protocols to be incorporated into the official systems of vessel distress management, with the potential to extend to other member states, and to incorporate other biota.
