Project

Spanish-Portuguese Meteorological information system for trans-boundary operations in forest fires (SPITFIRE)

The SPITFIRE Project addresses several issues aiming to increase the efficiency of actions of prevention, preparedness and response to wild fires in trans boundary areas.

The main objective of this project is the improvement of information exchange on meteorology and forest fire risk in the border area between Portugal and Spain through the identification, design and implementation of data interchange protocols and the development of a cross-border service on weather and fire-risk forecast (SPITFIRE platform). Besides the immediate positive effects of SPITFIRE for Portugal and Spain, this approach can be replicated to other cross-border regions in Europe who are at high risk and suffer greatly from forest fires.
