Spotlight on preparing for and responding to wildfires in Greece.

We invite you to apply to participate in the European Union's Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations media trip to Greece, from 1 to 3 September 2026.

Due to climate change, wildfires are becoming more frequent and more destructive. In 2025 alone, a record 1 million hectares of land across the EU burned in wildfires – an area roughly half the size of Slovenia. In response, the EU is deploying a record number of firefighters, aircraft and emergency experts this summer to help protect lives, homes and nature.

As part of preparing to respond to wildfires, 777 firefighters from 14 countries will be deployed across high-risk areas in 6 countries in the south of Europe, including Greece.

During the media trip, you will have the opportunity to visit the Greek Fire Service Operations Base in Nea Makri, outside Athens, hosting the Romanian firefighters pre-positioned in Greece in September 2026, follow their training activities and accompany them on patrol.

You will also visit the Operations Centre of the Greek Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, which coordinates the various deployments.

The organiser will cover expenses incurred during the trip: flight tickets, accommodation, and meals.

Deadline for registration: 21 July 2026, 17:00 CET.
