Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarčič is convening today a Senior Officials’ Meeting on the humanitarian response to the ongoing conflict in Sudan. Participants include EU Member States plus other international donors and international organisations.

The meeting aims at mobilising additional resources to secure immediate emergency response for those most in need in Sudan and in neighbouring countries, as well at calling on all involved to respect international humanitarian law.

As part of the EU’s continued support to those in need in Sudan and in the region, a Humanitarian Air Bridge has been launched for Port Sudan. Until now, three flights have transported essential supplies to humanitarian partners on the ground.

A Humanitarian Air Bridge is expected to be launched at the end of May to support refugees and returnees in Chad.

Commissioner Lenarčič said: “The evolving humanitarian disaster in Sudan demands an international response. We have already organised the delivery of essential supplies through the EU’s Humanitarian Air Bridge to Port Sudan, to be followed by a similar operation for Chad. Now it is important to mobilise additional financial resources to those most in need in Sudan and its neighbours. At the same time, I urge, again, all parties involved in the conflict to fully respect humanitarian law and guarantee safe access to humanitarian aid workers.”
