Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič, is today taking part in the High-level Pledging Event for the Humanitarian Response in the Horn of Africa organised by the United Nations and international donors.

The event focuses on securing scaled-up resources in response to the drought, highlighting the capacity of humanitarian actors, and looking more closely at the root causes of the current situation.

With the Horn of Africa region suffering from a devastating drought, it is estimated that at least 43.3 million people require life-saving and life-sustaining assistance. The EU recently topped up its humanitarian funding for the Horn of Africa, which now totals €170 million for 2023.

As one of the major donors, the EU has remained engaged on the different crises affecting the region, drawing attention to the drought early on, and is focusing on addressing the most urgent vital needs and the protection of people in areas affected by conflicts and natural shocks.

You can follow the event on UN Web TV (live at 15:54 CEST).
