Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarčič, said “We are stepping up humanitarian support for those most in need in the region. Political instability in Sudan has deepened the food crisis in the country. In Uganda, the country’s generous refugee policy has been put under increasing strain due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We hope that other donors will now follow suit, and provide additional funding to help address the consequences of the food crises in Africa.”
Out of the total amount, €10.1 million are allocated to Sudan, where the pre-existing serious food insecurity crisis is made worse by the growing economic crisis, inter-tribal conflict, political turmoil and civil unrest.
Uganda remains the largest refugee hosting country in Africa and the third in the world, with over 1.5 million refugees and asylum seekers.
The €3 million allocated as additional humanitarian funding will help bridge the current funding gap, which has resulted in the World Food Programme (WFP) reducing the food rations distributed to the refugees.
