Today, in the margins of the UN General Assembly, Commissioner Lenarčič will co-chair the high-level event “Tackling a ‘perfect storm’ of humanitarian crises: Expanding the resource base in the face of exploding needs while strengthening resilience”, together with co-chair Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs for Indonesia, H.E. Mr. Tri Tharyat.

The event is organised in cooperation with the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA) and will take place from 10:30 to 12:00 EDT (16:30 to 18:00 CET), with the participation of H.E. Mr. Martin Griffiths, UN Under-Secretary-General and Emergency Relief Coordinator, OCHA.

The past decade has seen a steady and significant rise in humanitarian needs around the world. In 2022, the combined impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, widespread conflict, food insecurity, and the worsening global climate emergency, resulted in an even faster escalation and a dramatic increase of humanitarian needs.

This high-level side event aims to encourage a collective reflection on the steps to be taken in the short and the long-term that could contribute to tackle the gap between needs and available resources.

The event will discuss strategies to expand the donor base and ensure more balanced and sustainable contributions for humanitarian action from a broad range of donors. It will also highlight the key role of community-level resilience as a necessary component to complement the humanitarian response.
