On World Refugee Day, we will recognise the strength and resilience of the more than 117 million people displaced globally. Forced from their homes by conflict, persecution, violence and human rights violations.

This announcement comes as drought related food insecurity and malnutrition rates are surging nationwide in Somalia, with 6.5 million people (i.e. around 1 in 3 Somalis) facing hunger and an estimated 1.85 million children under the age of 5 at risk of acute malnutrition.

With this new humanitarian funding, the EU will provide life-saving services to the most vulnerable in the eastern DRC, but also to Congolese refugees forced to flee the country.

This funding will serve to provide essential relief to the most vulnerable communities.

The new humanitarian funding will prioritise the provision of water, hygiene and sanitation services, but also emergency shelter to the people fleeing El Fasher.

This includes essentials such as tents and other shelter items, clothes, medical supplies and material to purify water. The supplies will be delivered via 2 EU-funded humanitarian flights that are scheduled to arrive to Kabul later this week.

Following the collapse of the former government in Damascus, the EU is working at all levels to boost humanitarian aid delivery, including through launching Humanitarian Air Bridge flights.

This brings total EU humanitarian assistance to Gaza to over €450 million since 2023 and comes in addition to the EU Air Bridge Flights which have delivered over 3,800 tonnes of aid.

A significant share of the allocation for the Caribbean will support humanitarian partners in Cuba, as they are responding to the impact of both the hurricanes and earthquakes that have struck in the past month.

This new emergency aid package will provide urgent food assistance, shelter and health care amongst other essential support. The Commission is also facilitating the delivery of material assistance via the EU Civil Protection Mechanism to Beirut.

Amid ongoing hostilities in Lebanon, over 100,000 civilians, including Lebanese and Syrians have crossed into Syria in search of shelter. The majority of those crossing, notably women and children, are traveling on foot and urgently require humanitarian assistance.

This emergency funding aims to tackle the most urgent needs such as protection, food assistance, shelter and health care. The EU stands ready to provide further support by mobilising all the available emergency response tools, including via use of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.

President von der Leyen delivered the following statement yesterday in a press conference with Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency, on support for Ukraine's energy security in the coming winter.

In response to the heavy rains and landslides that struck Ethiopia in July 2024, the European Union has provided €150,000 to support the country’s response in providing life-saving interventions in the affected areas.

The response includes providing emergency shelter and cash assistance for people that have lost their homes or livelihoods, as well as healthcare and water and sanitation services, among other actions.

The funding will serve to provide assistance to the most vulnerable people affected by the hurricane, including cash assistance, water, sanitation and hygiene, food items and other basic needs, among other aspects.
