International football stars Marouane Fellaini and Anja Mittag have joined forces with the EU to show that they care about refugees worldwide.

With the support of UEFA, the European football’s governing body and host of the European Championship, and the International Federation of Professional Footballers (FIFPro), they are kick-starting an EU campaign on the occasion of World Refugee Day 2016 on 20 June to raise awareness of EU life-saving support for refugees.

The EU gives more than €1 billion a year to help refugees forced to flee their homes due to conflict, persecution and natural disasters. This vital humanitarian funding provides access to shelter, food, health care, sanitation, education and other essential services.

More than 65 million people are forcibly displaced as a result of violent conflict and natural disasters.

Refugees need access to shelter, protection, food, health, nutrition, water, sanitation and education.

51% of the global refugee population are children. This is the highest proportion in over a decade.

The two children who appear with the players in the video come from refugee families who are now living in Europe. Seven-year-old Nathan Isayas, originally from Eritrea, and Christallenia Solomon, originally from Nigeria, had to flee from their countries with their families due to political and religious persecution. They, like other 65 million people worldwide, cannot return to their home country.

World Refugee Day has been celebrated every year since 2001, when the UN General Assembly designated it to observe the 50th anniversary of the United Nations Convention relating to the Status of Refugees.
