The EU is one of the world’s leading humanitarian donors committed to providing emergency relief and life-saving support to millions around the world.

Underlining the EU’s solidarity with the most vulnerable, the EU Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarčič is travelling to Ljubljana today to participate at the 1st Slovenian Humanitarian Forum.

The Forum is bringing together actors from the development sector, humanitarian aid, politics, media, academia, civil society and private sector.

Commissioner Lenarčič, representing the European Commission, will be presenting his vision on how to address the most pressing challenges at the high-level panel “Humanitarian aid between needs and resources: How to respond in a faster, more effective, comprehensive and preventive way?”.

Stressing on the importance for international community to work closer on tackling the root causes of humanitarian needs, he is also advocating persistently to close the widening funding gap, about which Commissioner Lenarčič said: “The explosion of humanitarian needs that we are witnessing is unprecedented in its scale and abruptness. At the same time, disasters fuelled by climate change are endangering more and more people. It is evident that humanitarian funding is not keeping up with the increasing needs. The ones most affected by the humanitarian funding gap will be the vulnerable communities in various crises. Supporting the ones in need should be a priority for the wider international community. Bridging the humanitarian funding gap will require creative solutions and global cooperation.”
