On the one-year anniversary of the devastating earthquakes that struck southern Türkiye and northern Syria, killing thousands of people and affecting the livelihoods of millions, the EU continues to stand in solidarity with the affected people in both countries.

The emergency funding will support humanitarian partners UNICEF and the WHO in their efforts to address immediate and critical needs related to Health, water, hygiene and sanitation.

This new funding will address the most critical humanitarian needs stemming from the aftermath of the earthquakes and the regional refugee crisis.

The funding will help people affected by the main ongoing humanitarian crises in the region and will strengthen disaster preparedness in an area prone to natural hazards.

Today, the Commission reached a new milestone as the amount of in-kind assistance delivered to Ukraine now stands at over 140,000 tonnes, making this the largest ever operation supported by the EU’s Emergency Response Coordination Centre.

This new EU humanitarian aid package will respond to the most acute protection and humanitarian needs, including food, health, nutrition, wash, shelter, and education for children in the context of emergencies.

This funding will support the large number of internally displaced people, which reached 2.6 million last year, as well as others affected by the ongoing fighting.

The Commission has allocated almost €70 million to fund the development of new specialised teams and equipment to further strengthen the preparedness and response to chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) risks.
