The funding comes from the EU’s Emergency Toolbox to respond to sudden onset crises. It adds on to the EU humanitarian aid allocated to Sudan this year, to contribute to the response to the cholera epidemic that has been claiming lives in the country since September 2023.

Over the 3-day forum, the EU will reaffirm its support to address major displacement crises and areas linked to refugee support and protection.

The focus of the event is on ‘People at the Center of Humanitarian Action in the Context of the Climate Crisis'. There, Commissioner Lenarčič will reiterate the call for broadening the donor base and ensuring respect of international humanitarian law.

As the humanitarian situation continues to worsen in the Middle East, the Commission will provide €125 million in humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people in 2024.

The current cholera epidemic broke out in February 2023, and has since affected all 10 provinces of Zimbabwe. Until 20 November 2023, there had been nearly 10,000 cases and 206 people had lost their lives.

The Horn of Africa continues to face multiple challenges resulting from extreme weather events: a catastrophic prolonged drought has been followed by widespread and devastating floods, affecting thus far more than 3 million people in Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya.
