Following the collapse of the former government in Damascus, the EU is working at all levels to boost humanitarian aid delivery, including through launching Humanitarian Air Bridge flights.

This brings total EU humanitarian assistance to Gaza to over €450 million since 2023 and comes in addition to the EU Air Bridge Flights which have delivered over 3,800 tonnes of aid.

The EU continues to remain a leading global humanitarian aid donor. With more than 300 million people estimated to need humanitarian assistance in 2025, the EU announces today an initial humanitarian budget for 2025 of €1.9 billion.

As Ethiopia faces multiple humanitarian challenges due to the impact of conflicts, recurrent climate shocks, as well as outbreaks of infectious diseases, the Commission will provide €40 million in initial humanitarian aid for 2025.

As Russia's war of aggression continues to devastate Ukraine, approximately 12.7 million people are in need of urgent assistance. New European Commission funding will be used to provide life-saving support and ensure that essential aid reaches the most vulnerable populations in Ukraine.

The Commission has coordinated a new medical evacuation from Gaza via the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, transferring 8 patients in need of urgent care and 25 accompanying family members to hospitals in Belgium, Romania and Spain.

OCHA’s assessment of the current humanitarian situation globally paints a bleak picture. As was the case last year, the GHO 2025 reflects intensive work by humanitarians to prioritize assistance and protection for the people and places who need it most.
