The EU has announced today the release of €11 million in humanitarian aid for Central America and Mexico on the occasion of the “High-level Solidarity Roundtable in support of the 2023 Northern Central America Humanitarian Response Plans”, which took place in Geneva.

A powerful earthquake of 7.8 magnitude – one of the strongest earthquakes in the region in more than 100 years - struck the region of Gaziantep in Türkiye, which impacted neighbouring Syria as well, overnight.

The announcement was made on the occasion of the EU-ECOWAS ministerial meeting held in Brussels today, attended by Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarčič. Up to €111 million of the mentioned budget will benefit ECOWAS members.
