Ethiopia: EU provides emergency humanitarian funding following devastating floods in the country

Following heavy rains in April and May 2024, several regions across the country are experiencing severe flooding, affecting over 590,000 people, and displacing nearly 100,000. 

The European Union has allocated €400,000 in emergency funding to support humanitarian partners on the ground working to provide immediate aid to the most vulnerable. 

Half of this funding will go to our partner Save the Children to provide multi-purpose cash transfers, provide water and sanitation, and work on cholera prevention and response measures in the Somali region. The remaining €200,000 will support the Ethiopia Red Cross Society’s emergency response in the flood-affected areas of Oromia, including food assistance, multi-purpose cash transfers, shelter, community awareness on disease prevention. 

The recent flooding has worsened the already precarious situation for many communities, who are struggling with the impacts of extreme weather events, including prolonged droughts followed by severe floods.
