In response to the impact of tropical cyclone Trami in the Philippines (where it was named Kristine), the EU has approved €1.5 million in humanitarian aid to help the most the affected populations. This funding will help provide assistance in the hardest-hit-areas (such as Bicol and Calabarzon), notably to people who have lost their homes and remain displaced.
During its pass over Luzon, Visayas and northern Mindanao, Trami caused widespread floods and landslides, which resulted in a high number of casualties and damage. It is estimated that close to a million people had been displaced, while approximately 7 million people are affected.
This emergency funding comes in addition to the €4.5 million already allocated to the Philippines this year in humanitarian aid. Nearly €2 million had previously been released following floods and tropical cyclones in Mindanao and other parts of the country in February, July, and September 2024.
Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič, said: “I am sad to see that only a few days after my visit to Manila, the Philippines was, once more this year, severely struck by a disaster. As I reiterated during my stay, the EU stands ready to help populations that are on the frontline of climate-related disasters”.
