Despite all the efforts of humanitarian actors over the past eight months, often at great risk to themselves, the amount of aid allowed into Gaza has fallen to unacceptably low levels.

In view of the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Afghanistan, the EU has activated its emergency aid reserve to avoid a risk of famine in the country. This will bring the total EU response to nearly €150 million in humanitarian aid for this crisis in 2024.

The event brings together 100 high-profile speakers and participants involved in shaping crisis management from the EU institutions and Member States, international partners and academia.

Today and tomorrow, the European civil protection community will discuss lessons learned and ways forward in civil protection during the 8th edition of the European Civil Protection Forum.

The funding will help address the most pressing needs of the affected populations, including shelter, water and sanitation access and other essential items for people who lost their homes.

Today, the European Commission adopted the Communication on the Evaluation of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM) for the years 2017-2022. The Evaluation highlights the need for increased operational coordination across sectors to improve how Europe deals with disasters and crises.

The funding will support food security and assistance for malnutrition, health care and protection, water, sanitation and hygiene, shelter and education activities, as well as the transportation of humanitarian workers and supplies to remote and inaccessible locations.

This strong commitment shows once more the willingness of the EU and the international community to mitigate the impact of the Syrian crisis; and support the populations both in Syria and in neighbouring countries.

This assistance will support both Syrians inside Syria and those in neighbouring countries, as well as their host communities in Lebanon, Türkiye, Jordan and Iraq.
