To promote the EU’s strong commitment to upholding international humanitarian law worldwide, Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarčič is today participating at the international event “Humanitarian crisis, protection of critical infrastructure and environment during armed conflicts and in relations to peacebuilding measures: legal challenges of the 21st century”. The event is organised by the Slovenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In 2023, humanitarian needs are expected to hit new records, yet the issue of humanitarian access remains a major hurdle in helping the people in need. Armed conflicts remain one of the main causes of humanitarian crises, with civilians often bearing the heaviest burden, while security of humanitarian workers themselves is ever more endangered.
During his 2-day visit the Commissioner will meet with government representatives and humanitarian experts. While in Slovenia, Commissioner will take part in the event organised by the Slovenian government Office for Cohesion funds on the occasion of celebrating the adoption of the 2021-2027 EU Cohesion programme for Slovenia. Separately, he will also meet with the new Slovenian President Nataša Pirc Musar.
