The improving the Integrated Response to pollution Accident at sea and chemical risk in port (IRA-MAR) project aims to improve marine pollution preparedness in Spain, France, Italy, Malta, Morocco, Portugal and Tunisia. These countries are faced with increasingly complex risks due to the variety of pollutants and the uncertainties regarding their impact on the marine environment and human health.
The beneficiary countries have identified gaps to be filled in order to improve their operational knowledge and capability. The project aims to reduce these gaps by developing tools, training and improving knowledge. IRA-MAR takes a holistic approach to the activities developed in the project. It aims to: enable countries to serve across multiple areas and deal with ever-changing risks; assess the risks related to HNS in ports; and study the possibility of using drones to improve monitoring, detection and response capabilities of various pollutants.
The project activities focus on the prevention of and protection from the effects of maritime disasters in the beneficiary countries. IRA-MAR will be implemented in coordination with the Secretariats of regional sea conventions work programmes and strategies, and will also contribute to future projects.
