Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič, has issued the following statement:
"Last night a devastating earthquake of magnitude 6.8 on the Richter scale struck central Morocco, affecting notably Marrakesh (77 km north-east the epicentre) and causing hundreds of casualties according to initial reports.
At this difficult time, the EU expresses its solidarity with the people and authorities of Morocco.
Our thoughts are with all those who have lost loved ones and the brave first responders working to save lives.
The EU's Emergency Response Coordination Centre is closely monitoring the situation and stands ready to provide any needed assistance if requested."
