The 7.8 magnitude earthquake that rocked Türkiye and Syria yesterday morning has already taken the lives of thousands, while many people are still stuck under the rubble.

A powerful earthquake of 7.8 magnitude – one of the strongest earthquakes in the region in more than 100 years - struck the region of Gaziantep in Türkiye, which impacted neighbouring Syria as well, overnight.

The announcement was made on the occasion of the EU-ECOWAS ministerial meeting held in Brussels today, attended by Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarčič. Up to €111 million of the mentioned budget will benefit ECOWAS members.

The funding will allow humanitarian partners to ensure the provision of life-saving support such as protection, food, shelter, health care, and education.

Today, Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič, and the Prime Minister of Poland, Mateusz Morawiecki, are visiting the new rescEU energy hub in Poland that will act as a logistical centre for delivering emergency energy assistance to Ukraine.

The Commission has allocated €102.5 million in humanitarian aid to help vulnerable communities in Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon, as the humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate in the Lake Chad region.

To promote the EU’s strong commitment to upholding international humanitarian law worldwide, Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarčič is today participating at an international event in Slovenia.

Human-induced humanitarian crises, resulting from wars with often widespread violations of international humanitarian law, conflicts or outbreaks of violence are the main source of humanitarian needs in the world.

The Commission is allocating today €242 million to Finland for the development of the first rescEU chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) strategic reserve.
