Today, a new EU Humanitarian Air Bridge flight has arrived to Kabul. It has delivered 36 tonnes of life-saving cargo to address the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan and support victims of the 22 June earthquake.

Due to the rapidly deteriorating security situation in Somalia, the EU is launching a Humanitarian Air Bridge to deliver emergency supplies to hard-to-reach areas which are no longer accessible by road. This will be a major logistics operation, with an estimated 50 to 70 flights needed.

As natural hazards such as forest fires worsen across Europe and the Russian invasion of Ukraine has intensified EU civil protection requests, representatives gathered over 28-29 June for the 7th European Civil Protection Forum.

Following a request from the Government of Ukraine for medical equipment, protective gear, and specialised equipment for public health risks such as chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) threats, the European Commission has mobilised its new rescEU emergency reserves.

The Forum, organised by the European Commission on 28 and 29 June 2022, will bring together over 700 international representatives from the civil protection and disaster management communities such as civil protection authorities, EU institutions, the scientific community, and the private sector.

Since mid-May, heavy rains have particularly affected the area of Paraiba, Pernambuco and Alagoas states causing severe damage, landslides, and loss of livelihoods.

The support will benefit affected and displaced people in the worst hit regions of the two neighbouring countries and be channelled through the EU’s humanitarian aid partners on the ground.

In response to the powerful earthquake that struck southern Afghanistan early morning of 22 August, the European Commission is allocating €1 million in humanitarian funding to address the most urgent needs by affected Afghans.

Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič is visiting Ethiopia on 20-21 June 2022 to demonstrate EU support to the humanitarian response in the north of the country and in the drought-hit areas of south and south-eastern Ethiopia.
